City Police dismantles illegal structures

ABOUT ten unoccupied structures were removed at Okahandja Park in Windhoek by the City Police this afternoon.

City Police senior superintendent Gerry Shikesho confirmed the demolisions. He said that because a court order is needed to remove a structure that is already occupied, the City of Windhoek contractor tasked with removing the structures only removed those that were not occupied. "We will be monitoring the situation throughout the night because the people have a tendency to put up structures in the middle of the night," Shikesho said. He added that some owners who were found at the structures were given an opportunity to dismantle their own structures. "Once the contractor demolishes the structure the owner loses their material and those who take down their structures themselves can keep the building material," he said. Shikesho said that they are waiting for a court decision in February for the removal of the occupied structures. He said there were no arrests made during the operation.
