UNAM students and staff have to pay cash for food in the dining hall and at kiosks because the university cannot pay catering companies the more than N$10 million it owes them.
One of the catering companies, Nutrifoods, confirmed yesterday that the university owed it N$6,6 million, which has been outstanding for more than three months. Three catering companies, including Nutrifoods, operate on the Unam campus. A student representative council (SRC) member told The Namibian that Unam also owes the operator of its staff cafeteria millions since November last year. Other sources have said that Unam also owes other service providers, such as cleaning companies, unspecified amounts. Nutrifoods put up a notice at the campus dining hall last week, informing students that as from 10 June, they would no longer be able to swipe their cards for food purchases, and that only cash would be accepted. Nutrifoods managing director, Dirk van Schalkwyk, confirmed yesterday that Unam owed the company about N$6,6 million.
