Chaos hits Grootfontein Swapo meeting

POLICE were called in yesterday to calm tempers after chaos erupted at a Swapo Party meeting at Grootfontein, where a team of senior national leaders assigned to the region were to oversee the election of a new district leadership.

The current district leadership's term of office ends in September, while the Swapo Party elective congress is scheduled for either October or November. This means that if the current district leadership stays on, it is argued that there will not be enough time to elect representatives to attend the party's elective congress, at which President Hage Geingob is seeking to be installed as party president. Some of the senior leaders assigned to the region who attended are Itah Kandjii-Murangi, Juliet Kavetuna, Otto Ipinge and Natangwe Ithete. Efforts to speak to any of the assigned leaders who were at Grootfontein yesterday proved unsuccessful.
