Boko Haram killed nine people, including five soldiers, over the weekend in an ambush on Nigerian troops in Nigeria's northeast, the army's spokesperson said.

In a statement distributed late on Sunday, Nigerian army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said the jihadists attacked as the troops were carrying out "clearance operations" in Boko Haram's fiefdom, Borno state, on Saturday.

The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed the attack in a statement, saying it killed nine people in the southern part of Borno state.
