Water marshals will be appointed at public institutions in view of the water shortage Namibia is facing.
In a media statement issued yesterday, the agriculture ministry's acting permanent secretary Sophia Kasheeta said Cabinet last week approved a memorandum for a water saving campaign. She said water marshals, selected amongst staff, will be responsible for detecting and fixing leaks, as well as providing overall support to the national water saving campaign. Namibia is facing a severe water shortage due to the sustained drought over the past three years, and President Hage Geingob in June this year declared a state of emergency. Poor rainfall since the 2013/2014 rainy season has seen the three dams supplying water to the capital (Omatako, Von Bach and Swakoppoort) nearly empty.
