Windhoek still ignores water restrictions

THE City of Windhoek has said the date when supply dams will run dry depends on residents' adherence to restrictions. A City of Windhoek spokesperson yesterday said they have identified 48 boreholes as a short-term measure in case dams run dry and N$100 million has been set aside for nine more boreholes. “The boreholes alone, without any contribution from NamWater, together with the reclaimed water, will only be able to supply 40% to 45% of our needs under normal circumstances,” they stated. City water expert Pedro Maritz told the Cabinet Committee on Water Supply Security and the Technical Committee of Experts meeting in Windhoek yesterday the city was struggling to reach its 40% water-saving target. President Hage Geingob appointed the committee on 6 July with orders to present a detailed cost-implementation plan on how to avert the projected water crisis by August 2016.
