Day of the African Child celebrated in Erongo

Erongo yesterday played host to” International Day of the African Child “celebrations in Swakopmund.
The day has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity. It honours those who participated in the Soweto Uprising of 1976 on that day.
Celebrations were attended by more than a 100 children as well as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, a Unicef goodwill ambassador and Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare Lucia Witbooi with “conflict and crises in Africa” and “protecting the rights of all children in Africa” as theme.
Deputy Minister Lucia Witbooi, speaking on behalf of the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, concluded the following:‘’I appeal to you all to accelerate efforts by upholding the rights of the children in Namibia through community sensitization, children empowerment projects and enforcement of laws that prohibit had practices.’’
