AR defiant

A LAST-MINUTE attempt by the Namibian Police to block the 16 June demonstration over the building of a new parliament has failed.

Police Inspector General Sebastian Ndeitunga spent hours yesterday afternoon trying to convince leaders of the Affirmative Repositioning movement to abandon their plans for a mass demonstration, but even though an agreement was reached, the AR announced that the march will continue. AR leaders last night said the agreement was expected to only cover the route of the demonstration, and the time it will last. Police do not want a public demonstration between Monday and Saturday next week because of the visit of the Indian president, as well as the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) and European Union joint parliamentary assembly.
