Authorities say three people are suspected to have died as floods strike southwest Germany.

The town council in Schwaebisch Gmuend says in a statement early on Monday that a firefighter died as he tried to rescue someone from floodwaters near the town's railway station. The person he was trying to save also is believed to have died.

Police say the body of a third victim was found in a flooded garage in Weissbach near the city of Heilbronn.

Southern and western Germany, along with other parts of Europe, experienced heavy rainstorms over the weekend.
