THE OMUTHIYA Town Council threw away more than 200 bags of maize meal donated by the South African government for drought relief after condemning it as unfit for human consumption.
Some children blew the whistle after seeing two Oshikoto Regional Council trucks dumping the bags of maize meal at the dump site where they were buried by an Omuthiya Town Council excavator about 10 days ago. The children went to the dump site after the trucks had left and dug up the maize meal before informing their parents. The message on the empty bags says the maize meal was a gift from South Africa and that it was refined in December last year and would have expired in June this year. Oshikoto chief regional officer Frans Enkali confirmed to The Namibian that they had to throw away some bags of maize meal they found unfit for human consumption. Although the residents found 80 bags, Enkali said they condemned 207 bags that were damaged during the transportation process by TransNamib.
