THE fatal assault that a Gobabis area farm worker carried out on his girlfriend near the end of 2012 resulted in him being sent to prison for an effective 28 years yesterday.

The callousness and brutality of the crime that Paulus Shilongo committed showed that he attached no value to other people’s lives, their physical integrity or their dignity, Judge Dinnah Usiku said when she sentenced Shilongo in the Windhoek High Court. She sentenced Shilongo, who has already been kept in custody for almost three and a half years, to 30 years’ imprisonment, with two years of the sentence suspended for a period of five years on condition that Shilongo is not convicted of murder or any offence involving violence against another person committed during the period of suspension. Shilongo was convicted of murder, committed without a direct intention to kill, four weeks ago.
